  • Guardians' Kyle Nelson: Removed from 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Nelson was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Friday.

Nelson posted a 9.31 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 9.2 innings across 10 appearances in the majors last year. He spent the second half of the season at Triple-A Columbus and will now be cast off the 40-man roster.

  • Guardians' Scott Moss: DFA'd by Cleveland

    Rotowire

Moss (shoulder) was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Friday.

Moss dealt with a shoulder injury late in the 2021 campaign but still made nine appearances (seven starts) at Triple-A Columbus. He put up a 7.08 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 20.1 innings and will now lose his spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Guardians' J.C. Mejia: Designated for assignment

    Rotowire

Mejia was designated for assignment by Cleveland on Friday.

Mejia was shuffled between the major-league club and Triple-A Columbus in 2021. He made 17 appearances (11 starts) in his first taste of big-league action but had a lackluster 8.25 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 52.1 innings. The right-hander will now lose his spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Guardians' Daniel Johnson: Loses spot on 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Johnson was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Friday.

Johnson appeared in 30 major-league games last year and hit .221 with four homers, nine runs, five RBI and a stolen base. However, he spent the final few weeks of the season in the minors and will now lose his spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Guardians' Justin Garza: DFA'd by Guardians

    Rotowire

Garza was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Friday.

Garza made his major-league debut in 2021 and logged a 4.71 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 28.2 innings across 21 appearances. However, he'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Guardians' Harold Ramirez: Cast off 40-man

    Rotowire

Ramirez was designated for assignment on Friday.

While Ramirez was serviceable last season, he's hardly a building block for Cleveland, and the team added 11 legitimate prospects to the 40-man roster in corresponding moves. He could be with another organization when spring training arrives.

  • Guardians' George Valera: Rewarded with 40-man roster spot

    Rotowire

Valera was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

Cleveland's second-best prospect and best outfield prospect, Valera was a lock to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. He combines plus power with a very selective approach and has a chance to be a middle-of-the-oder masher in a couple years.

  • Guardians' Jose Tena: Added to 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Tena was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

Tena had a strong showing as a 20-year-old at High-A, hitting .281/.331/.467, but he finds himself buried on the organizational depth chart, as Cleveland is loaded with middle infielders in the upper levels. He should head to Double-A next year.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Added to 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Rocchio was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

The best prospect in the organization, Rocchio was a lock to get protected from the Rule 5 draft. He started making good on the Francisco Lindor comparisons by tapping into notable power at Double-A as a 20-year-old, but he may not debut until 2023.

  • Guardians' Konnor Pilkington: Shielded from Rule 5 draft

    Rotowire

Pilkington was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

The headliner in the deadline deal that sent Cesar Hernandez to the White Sox, Pilkington is one of several Cleveland pitching prospects in the upper levels who could debut next season. That said, he is probably behind Cody Morris, at the very least, in the pecking order.

  • Guardians' Richie Palacios: Added to 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Palacios was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

Palacios has upped his prospect stock with a strong Arizona Fall League (.871 OPS) and is nearly ready for the big leagues. He can play second base but fits best in left field, given Cleveland's organizational depth.

  • Guardians' Jhonkensy Noel: Protected from Rule 5 draft

    Rotowire

Noel was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

Noel is a rare case of a hitting prospect in the lower levels getting added to the 40-man roster as Rule 5 draft protection. However, he is one of Cleveland's best prospects, with a chance to develop a plus hit tool to go with easy plus power. He should spend a good chunk of next season at Double-A.

  • Guardians' Cody Morris: Added to 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Morris was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

This move was a certainty, as Morris put up video game numbers at Double-A (1.35 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) and Triple-A (1.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) last season. He has a four-pitch mix headlined by a plus fastball and plus changeup and should get a chance in the big-league rotation whenever a spot opens up next season.

  • Guardians' Bryan Lavastida: Shielded from Rule 5 draft

    Rotowire

Lavastida was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

As things stand, Austin Hedges is the lone big-league catcher on the depth chart, so Lavastida figures to get a chance to earn a spot next season. He has a strong hit tool and some power but will likely open the year at Triple-A.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Rewarded with 40-man roster spot

    Rotowire

Kwan was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

One of the more underrated hitting prospects in the game, Kwan has always had great plate skills but he started tapping into more power last season. He is primed to get a chance at the big-league level in 2022 and is a good late-round target in draft-and-hold leagues.

  • Guardians' Tyler Freeman: Added to 40-man roster

    Rotowire

Freeman (shoulder) was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.

This move was a given, even though Freeman's 2021 season didn't go as planned. He performed up to his usual standards (.323/.372/.470), but was limited to 41 games at Double-A when a shoulder injury ended his season. He is recovering from left labrum surgery and should spend the bulk of the 2022 season at Triple-A.

  • Guardians' Tobias Myers: Dealt to Cleveland

    Rotowire

Myers was traded from the Rays to the Guardians on Friday in exchange for Junior Caminero and was then added to Cleveland's 40-man roster.

Both Myers and Caminero are legitimate prospects, but the Rays were dealing with a 40-man roster crunch, so they will bring the younger Caminero into the fold so that they can retain a player they may have otherwise lost in the Rule 5 draft by adding Myers to the 40-man roster. The 23-year-old righty logged a 3.32 ERA at Double-A and a 4.50 ERA at Triple-A. He could make his big-league debut in 2022 in the rotation or the bullpen.

  • Indians' Jose Ramirez: Option picked up for 2022

    Rotowire

Cleveland exercised Ramirez's $12 million team option for 2022 on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

The five-year, $26 million contract extension Ramirez signed in March 2017 includes options of $12 million for 2022 and $14 million for 2023, making it one of the more club-friendly deals in baseball history. Ramirez has already turned in 28.0 WAR over the first five years of the contract, and he continued to dazzle even in the midst of a rebuilding year for Cleveland in 2021. He finished with a .266/.355/.538 slash line, 36 home runs, 111 runs, 103 RBI and 27 stolen bases across 152 games, with his combination of on-base skills, power, speed and durability making him a major value for those who grabbed him in the first or second round of drafts. He'll likely be a consensus first-round choice in 2022 drafts as he enters his age-29 season.
